Dedicated Development Team vs Freelancers vs Agency: An Honest Comparison

Once you've decided not to hire full-time engineers — or can't hire them fast enough — you have three real options. Each is genuinely the best choice for some situations and a mistake for others. Here's the comparison we'd want if we were on the buying side.

Freelancers

Best for: small, well-defined tasks; a specialist skill for a few weeks; very tight budgets. Strengths: cheapest per hour, fastest to start, no contract overhead. Weaknesses: continuity — the person may be gone next month, along with the context; no backup if they're ill; quality varies enormously; you become the project manager, code reviewer and integrator. Fine for a landing page or a script; risky for a product you'll run for years.

Project-based agency

Best for: a defined deliverable with a clear end — a website, an app version 1, a VR module. Strengths: fixed scope and price, a whole team's expertise applied to a problem, accountability for the outcome. Weaknesses: everything after launch is a change request; the team disperses to other projects and context leaks; long-running products end up in "maintenance retainer" limbo. Excellent when the goal is a thing; awkward when the goal is a roadmap.

Dedicated team

Best for: ongoing product development, extending an in-house team, MVP-to-scale journeys. Strengths: the same hand-picked engineers work only on your product, inside your tools and standups, month after month — context compounds; the provider carries hiring, retention and backup; team size flexes monthly. Weaknesses: more expensive per hour than freelancers; needs someone on your side to own priorities (a product owner, even part-time); a poor provider can turn it into body-shopping. Look for interviewable profiles, senior oversight, IP assignment and a trial sprint.

The decision in one question

Is this a project or a product? A project has an end; hire for the deliverable. A product has a roadmap; you need a team whose knowledge of your codebase grows every sprint. And if you're not sure — start with a small project, and convert the people who did it well into a dedicated pod.

How we run dedicated pods

Hand-picked in-house engineers you interview and approve, a paid trial sprint before commitment, your Slack/Jira/repos, month-to-month scaling and full IP assignment — the model behind our 98% client retention. Details on our dedicated teams page, or tell us your roadmap and we'll propose a pod.
